The system

What is the endocannabinoid system?

The endocannabinoid system is a signalling network that runs throughout the body, and its job is homeostasis, which means keeping things steady when something pushes them off balance.

It was identified in the early 1990s and is found in the skin, joints, muscles, immune cells, organs and nervous system. Harvard Health Publishing describes it as critical for almost every aspect of our moment to moment functioning, and lists learning and memory, emotional processing, sleep, temperature control, pain control, inflammatory and immune responses, and eating among the functions it helps regulate.

It has three parts. Receptors sitting on the surface of cells. Endocannabinoids, which the body makes itself and which bind to those receptors. And enzymes that break them down again once the message has landed.

It is a lipid based system

The endocannabinoids your body makes are built from fatty acids, and the receptors they act on sit inside cell membranes made of lipid. The whole system speaks in fats rather than in water.

That is why both products are lipid based. Hemp seed oil, black seed oil, jojoba, sacha inchi, olive oil, beeswax and coconut butter are carriers, but they are also the same class of material the system itself is made from.

More than two receptors

CB1 and CB2 are the two best known. CB1 sits mostly in the brain and nervous system and is considered the most abundant metabotropic receptor in the brain. CB2 sits mostly in immune and peripheral tissue, including the skin.

They are not the whole picture. Published research shows plant cannabinoids also interacting with TRPV1, GPR55, the PPAR family and 5-HT1A, which is part of why a broad spectrum formulation behaves differently from a single isolated compound.

Where it is

Everywhere, not one place

Skin, joints, muscles, nerves, immune cells and organs. There is no single organ you could point at and call the endocannabinoid system.

It is a regulator. When something pushes the body away from balance, this is one of the systems that works to bring it back.

Why topical

It meets the receptors directly

Swallow a cannabinoid and much of it is metabolised by the liver before it reaches anything. Applied to the skin, it meets receptors in the tissue underneath it. That is why both products go on rather than in.

Beyond CBD

CBD is where it starts, not where it ends.

What is actually in it

Most CBD products are one compound. This is a family.

The plant does not make a single compound. It makes a related family of them, and researchers believe they behave differently together than any one does alone. That idea is called the entourage effect, and it is the reason this is a broad spectrum formulation rather than an isolate.

Here is the family that is actually in the bottle. What each one does in the body is still being researched, and we are not going to tell you it will fix anything. What we will tell you is exactly how much of each is in there, and publish the laboratory certificate that proves it.

The one most people have heard of. The most researched of the plant compounds, and the largest single part of this formulation.

The compound the plant makes first. Everything else in the family is built from it, which is why it gets called the mother cannabinoid.

CBN

Forms slowly and naturally as hemp ages in air. It is not intoxicating.

Cannabichromene

CBC

One of the four compounds found most abundantly in hemp, and a growing area of research.

Cannabidivarin

CBDV

A close relative of CBD. Same idea, slightly shorter molecule.

Cannabicyclol

CBL

A rare one, formed slowly from CBC over time. Very little has been published about it, and we would rather say that than pad it out.

Cannabidiolic acid

CBDA

CBD as it exists in the living plant, before heat changes it. The raw form.

Cannabigerolic acid

CBGA

The raw form of CBG, and the true starting point of the whole chain.

Who made it

Not a doctor. An environmental scientist.

Barry Bonner would rather you knew that up front. He is British, fifty two, and lives in Texas.

His first twenty five years were spent in autoimmune disease and oncology. He started in the pharmaceutical industry and moved into advanced radiosurgery, working with particle accelerator therapy for cancer patients. In 2014 he was invited to the United States to work on a project by neurosurgeons from Stanford.

In 2017 he had a stroke. What followed was five years researching the endocannabinoid system, holistic health, and developing cannabinoid formulations that do not need to be inhaled.
